About the museum
The museum is housed in the Palazzo del Principe, the 16th-century castle overlooking the old village of Muro Leccese, partly occupied by the municipal offices. Many of the finds on display were recovered in 1999 during the restoration of the castle; since then the Università di Lecce has carried out numerous excavations that have documented the importance of the historic centre in the Messapian and medieval periods.
The rooms display objects, pottery and tools from the Messapian period through the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, and trace the history and social life of the settlement, reproduced in a scale model at the centre of the exhibition room. The Museo di Borgo Terra is considered the first example of promoting an old Salento village through archaeological evidence.
The guided tour includes the museum, the medieval castle, the noble floor (piano nobile), the underground rooms with the prisons and a semi-underground oil mill.
