About the museum
The Parco dei Guerrieri is an open-air museum covering several dozen hectares, stretching from the village of Vaste, the only hamlet of Poggiardo, to the Serre di Poggiardo ridge. It occupies the site of the ancient Messapian city of Bastae, probably founded in the 7th century BC and destroyed in 1147 by Guglielmo il Malo.
Excavations have uncovered sections of walls, building foundations, remains of huts, intact tombs with their grave goods, and the remains of a pagan temple. Some of the finds are displayed in the Museo archeologico della civiltà messapica, housed in the Palazzo Baronale di Vaste.
