About the museum
In the former school of Montemontanaro, a hamlet of Montefelcino, a collection of old bicycles is kept, which were used by craftsmen and traders who travelled through towns, villages and countryside, selling goods or offering services not available locally. The vehicles were equipped for the trades of barber, knife-grinder, carpenter and shoemaker, and also for selling haberdashery and delivering bread and milk to homes. The collection documents a period from the 1920s to the 1950s.
The bicycles are part of the collection of Rodolfo Castagni, an enthusiast of traditional trades and customs, who over the years has expanded the museum by recovering original 20th-century material and opening new sections.
The rooms host thematic displays: itinerant trades; war, with photographs and objects from the First and Second World Wars; the games of times past; rural and middle-class life; an exhibition of photographs from the 1940s and 1950s; a music section with radios, records and period instruments; and an exhibition of artistic nativity scenes (presepi) made by local artists.
