About the museum
The Quadreria occupies two adjoining 16th-century buildings, once owned by the Cangi family, in the centre of Fossombrone, near the Ponte della Concordia over the Metauro. The notary Giuseppe Cesarini (1895–1977) restored them from the 1940s to house his art collection, begun in the 1920s and enriched after his friendship with the painter Anselmo Bucci, born in Fossombrone.
The core of the collection consists of about seventy paintings and more than six hundred prints by Bucci; there are also works by 20th-century artists such as Giorgio Morandi, Achille Funi, Marino Marini, Francesco Messina and Gino Severini, as well as painters from the Marche. The first part of the Quadreria was inaugurated in 1951. On his death in 1977, Cesarini left the buildings and collections to the municipality of Fossombrone, so that they could be enjoyed by citizens and visitors.
Today the route is mainly on the first floor, reopened in 2017 after restoration with a new display of Bucci’s works, and includes the apartment preserved as it was on the day the collector died, with period furniture, porcelain and ceramics. In the courtyard are the “Tre grazie” (Three Graces), a high relief by Angelo Biancini, and a small garden with a fountain. The second floor with the Quadreria is currently closed for maintenance work.
