About the museum
The museum was founded in 1901 by the scholar Monsignor Augusto Vernarecci, a native of Fossombrone, together with the core of the civic picture gallery. After damage suffered by its first home during the war, in the sixties of the 20th century it was moved to the Corte Alta, the ducal palace commissioned by Federico da Montefeltro, where the Pinacoteca civica (civic picture gallery) is also housed today.
In 1997 the rooms were completely redisplayed, because discoveries and excavations at Forum Sempronii had enlarged the collections. The route documents the succession of cultures in the area: from the first flint tools of the Palaeolithic and Neolithic to the Picene civilisation, present from the 9th century BC, up to the many finds from the Roman town of Forum Sempronii, on the Via Flaminia about two kilometres from present-day Fossombrone.
Statues and other movable finds from Forum Sempronii are kept in the museum’s rooms; the archaeological park of the Roman site can be visited by groups by reservation.
