About the museum

The picture gallery is housed in the Franciscan convent of the Beato Sante sanctuary, on the hill of Mombaroccio. The first convent was founded in 1223 beside a small chapel; the present church was consecrated in 1351, and the complex was later rebuilt by Genga for Francesco Maria I Della Rovere. After the suppressions of the 19th century, the friars regained possession in 1883.

The gallery room, opening off the eastern portico, occupies the convent’s former kitchen, with an 18th-century coffered wooden ceiling. It holds paintings commissioned for the church and convent, prints, votive offerings, sacred silverware and a wrought-iron gate dating from 1719.

Three paintings stand out for their value: the polyptych of the Incredulity of Saint Thomas, a masterpiece by Zanino di Pietro; a Madonna of Humility from the Marche school of the early 15th century; and a Meeting of Anna and Joachim attributed to a 15th-century Tuscan artist.
