About the museum
The Pinacoteca civica di Fossombrone was founded in 1901 by Monsignor Augusto Vernarecci. The initial core consisted of works donated by the founder and was enriched by several donations, first among them that of the Rocchi Camerata Passionei family in 1906, as well as by works from other bequests and from churches and convents in the town.
The gallery is housed in the Corte Alta, the ducal palace commissioned by Federico da Montefeltro, which also contains the archaeological museum. The rooms display paintings that document painting in Fossombrone and its territory between the 16th and 19th centuries, including works by Francesco Guerrieri (1589–1657), a native of Fossombrone, by Federico Barocci and his followers, by Domenico Peruzzini, Giuseppe Diamantini, Sebastiano Ceccarini, Sebastiano Conca and Gaetano Lapis, and portraits by Francesco Podesti.
A visit to the two museums in the Corte Alta also gives access to the interior of the courtyard, the only one of the town's three courts that can be visited today; the town was once known as the “city of three courts”.
