About the museum
The Museo degli Argenti opened in 1997 in the former treasury of the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, beside the cathedral of Ariano Irpino. It holds the liturgical treasures of the diocese, including its most precious piece, the reliquary with two thorns from Christ’s crown, given to the diocese in 1269 by Charles I of Anjou; an annual historical re-enactment commemorates the gift.
Among the most significant works are the 17th-century silver statue of Sant’Ottone Frangipane, patron of the town and the diocese, the large silver chalice of Saint Elzeario of Sabran, an arm reliquary from the second half of the 15th century, a silver thurible and a monstrance by Pietro Vannini dated 1452. The collection is completed by the painting of the Madonna del parto with a silver frame and other sacred objects.
The museum is linked to the historical archive and the diocesan library. Nearby is also the “Giuseppina Arcucci” museum, run by the Sisters of the Holy Spirit.
