About the museum
The diocesan museum was established to safeguard the religious heritage of the diocese of Ariano Irpino-Lacedonia, following the guidelines of the Italian Episcopal Conference on sacred art. It was conceived above all to prevent the dispersal and deterioration of works removed from their original places of worship after the earthquakes of 1962 and 1980.
It is housed in the church of the Annunziata, in Via Annunziata, and develops on two levels along a linear route. In the nave of the church are displayed, among other things, the episcopal vestments, while the corridors and staircases preserve inscriptions and coats of arms of the bishops of the diocese.
The collection comprises canvas paintings, sculptures, epigraphs, altar frontals and marble tabernacles, devotional prints and liturgical vestments dating from the 17th to the 20th century. The museum’s website also offers a 3D virtual tour and information sheets on the main works, including the bust of Bishop Diomede Carafa of 1538.
