About the museum
The museum belongs to the Centro europeo di Studi Normanni (CESN), founded in 1991 in Ariano Irpino, the town where the first Norman county of southern Italy arose. In 1140 Roger II convened there the assembly of vassals that promulgated his Constitutions, one of the best-known moments in local history.
The current seat is the Palazzo Bevere-Gambacorta, a 17th-century building owned by the municipality and recently restored, with a four-arched gallery onto which seven rooms open. The new display, with LED lighting of rooms and finds, was opened on 1 July 2023 with the support of the Fondazione Cultura e Arte.
The route is divided into two sections. The first, devoted to Norman civilisation, includes a room with a multimedia installation on the history of the Norman-Swabian kingdom, models of towns and settlements, and the rooms of Roger II and Frederick II, with coins, seals, copies of documents and objects. The second section houses the Museo e Centro Studi “Mario Troso”, with about 250 pole weapons and a model of the Battle of Hastings of 1066.
