About the museum

The museum is housed in the mother house of the Sisters of the Holy Spirit and is named after Giuseppina Arcucci (Palermo 1860 – Ariano Irpino 1940), founder of the congregation. In 1877 Arcucci established the Pia Casa d’Istruzione e Lavoro in Ariano, in part of the former Benedictine monastery; the religious institute later grew out of that experience.

The museum opened in 1990, on the fiftieth anniversary of the founder’s death. The route comprises seven exhibition sections arranged in a continuous circuit.

The displays include archive documents of the Benedictine nuns active in Ariano (1565–1877) and of the religious sisters who succeeded them until 1900, books, furnishings and sacred objects inherited from the monastery, the reconstruction of Mother Arcucci’s room and some of her personal mementos. Other sections are devoted to the crafts of the congregation’s mission in the Philippines, begun in 1986, and to the objects of Bishop Andrea D’Agostino. The exterior walls are decorated with tempera and watercolour paintings by Ottaviano D’Antuono.
