About the museum
The museum was opened on 9 October 1999 and is housed in the former convent of San Giacomo, built at the same time as, or slightly after, the church of the same name, a Romanesque-Gothic church of the 13th century. The complex, documented from 1390, was founded as a convent of Augustinian nuns, became a cloistered monastery in the early 17th century and, after 1862, served as an orphanage, a hospice and a school; part of it still houses the liceo scientifico “Giacomo Torelli”.
The core of the museum is the group of the Bronzi Dorati, discovered on 26 June 1946 at Cartoceto di Pergola, in the locality of Santa Lucia di Calamello, by the Peruzzini brothers while digging a canal: more than three hundred fragments of gilt bronze, weighing about nine quintals, were found in a conical pit. The statues, two horsemen, two matrons and two horses, slightly larger than life-size, are displayed in an air-conditioned room in a pyramidal arrangement. The group is regarded as unique among known Roman remains.
The route is arranged around the cloister in four sections: art history (paintings and wooden sculptures from the early 15th to the 18th century), numismatics (Carboni collection), archaeology (finds from the area) and contemporary art (prints by Walter Valentini). A multimedia room offers an immersive experience.
