About the museum
The museum, named after Alvaro Casagrande, the mayor who gave the first impetus to archaeological research at Suasa, was opened on 24 June 2000. It is housed in the Palazzo della Rovere, a building erected at the beginning of the 17th century for the marquis Ippolito Della Rovere and bequeathed to his daughter Livia, a duchess who died here in 1641. It is run by the Municipality of Castelleone di Suasa.
The collections document the excavations of the Roman city of Suasa, carried out every summer since 1987 and now by the University of Bologna. The chronological route, across seven rooms, begins with the first human presence in the valley and reaches the end of the ancient city. In the courtyard is the lapidarium, with the stele of Safinia Prima and the inscription dedicated to Lucius Coiedius Candidus.
Among the main sections are the room of frescoes, with paintings from the 2nd century BC to the 3rd century AD showing all the Pompeian styles; the room of the Domus dei Coiedii, with a portrait of Augustus, jewellery, sealed amphorae and coins; the room of the republican domus; and the room of the public areas, with finds from the forum, necropolis, amphitheatre and theatre, including an imperial portrait identified as Caligula.
