About the museum
The Museo dei Fossili of Pioraco originated from the donation of the personal collection of Offerl Spitoni, a fellow townsman who entrusted the fossils he had gathered over the years to the community. The collection is now displayed in a room of the Polo Museale in the historic centre of the town, with its entrance from Piazza Matteotti.
The main core consists of ammonites collected in the gorge of Pioraco, in the Marche Apennines, where limestone rocks yield marine remains from distant epochs. Alongside these local finds, the museum presents specimens from abroad, including animal fossils from the earliest forms of life to mammals, and plant fossils from the Palaeozoic to the Upper Triassic, with some rare pieces kept in a separate room.
The museum is also known as the Museo dei Fossili e dei Funghi (Fossil and Mushroom Museum): regional tourist listings mention a collection of about two hundred plaster models of mushrooms, made by a local craftsman.
