About the museum
Paper production in Pioraco is documented from 1264, when the town had numerous small fulling mills (gualchiere), some of which still survive. Paper-making remained one of the area’s main economic resources, and the museum tells its story in the Polo Museale in the historic centre, with access from Piazza Matteotti.
The route presents artistic watermarks, documents and historic tools, and includes a reconstruction of a 14th-century fulling mill in which master papermakers demonstrate the production of handmade paper live.
In the same Polo Museale complex are also the Museo dei Fossili (fossil museum) and an exhibition of archaeological finds from the area, which have their own opening hours and tickets.
