About the museum
Rocca Varano dates from the 12th–13th century and stands on a steep rocky spur between the Chienti valley and the San Luca stream. It was the fortified residence of the da Varano, one of the most important lordly families of Camerino, who before the communal period collected tolls from travellers passing through the Apennines.
After the Swabian sack of 1259, the da Varano consolidated their power over Camerino and began building a fortified palace on the city walls, which continued until the end of the 15th century. In 1384 Giovanni di Berardo Varano had important works carried out: a second defensive curtain wall, a watchtower and a drawbridge on the west side, incorporating the original tower, about 19 metres high, into the new layout. With the spread of gunpowder the fortress lost its strategic importance and was later converted into a farmhouse.
From 1997 the association “Arti e Mestieri” ran it as a permanent exhibition centre for artistic crafts. Seriously damaged by the 2016 earthquake, it remained closed for about ten years. After consolidation and seismic improvement works, designed by the architects Giovanni and Leo Marucci, it was reopened on 12 October 2026 with a new historical and tourist route run by Archeoclub, with panels, QR codes, augmented-reality content, reconstructed furnishings and an exhibition room.
