About the museum
The Museo dei Mattonai is in La Rotta, a hamlet of Pontedera in the province of Pisa, a village that for centuries lived by brick production. Until the early decades of the 20th century the people of La Rotta were mainly employed as brickmakers, and only after the Second World War did this activity, and with it the self-contained economy that characterised the village, disappear.
Along the course of the Arno, brick production is documented since the Middle Ages, and in the La Rotta and Pietroconti area there are still traces of industrial archaeology, such as the kilns of the Braccini family, built in the early 20th century, near the river park.
The museum preserves the memory of this work and of those who practised it. The municipality of Pontedera includes it in the visit programmes linked to the river park: in recent summers the river boat “Andrea da Pontedera” has run special trips with a stop at La Rotta and a visit to the museum.
