About the museum

The church of San Pietro stands on the hill of the same name, one of three ridges around the Roman city of Alba Fucens, founded in 304 BC at the foot of Monte Velino. The building occupies the site of a 3rd-century BC temple of Apollo, converted into a Christian place of worship around the middle of the 6th century.

In the 12th century the back wall of the temple was partly demolished to make the apse and an underlying crypt; the interior was divided into three aisles, and a bell tower was raised on the façade, which still serves as the entrance today. In the following centuries the church underwent numerous restorations and alterations. The 1915 earthquake caused serious damage, and between 1955 and 1957 a restoration introduced a reinforced-concrete structure.

Since 2014 the church has been entrusted to the Polo museale dell'Abruzzo, now the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali Abruzzo. Inside remain the 13th-century ambo and iconostasis, decorated with mosaics and inlays in red and green porphyry, while the early Christian reliefs and the ancient carved wooden doors are displayed at the Museo d'Arte Sacra della Marsica in Celano.
