About the museum
The museum is housed in the Padiglione Torlonia, inside Villa Torlonia in Avezzano. After the Marsica earthquake of 1915 the pavilion became the permanent seat of the museum. In 1977, for the centenary of the draining of Lake Fucino, materials from private collections in Cerqueto di Fano Adriano, Lanciano and Roio were shown there.
The wooden elements and the vault of the pavilion were restored in the 1980s, while a further restoration of the building was completed in 2016.
The collection includes tools of farm and craft work such as looms, spindles, ploughs and rakes, as well as saddles, yokes, livestock brands and shepherds’ hats. On the walls are unpublished photographs of Lake Fucino, 19th-century ink drawings by Edward Lear and eight painted wooden mottoes on peasant life.
