About the museum
The Museo del Cappello di Montappone opened in 1991 and was re-fitted in 2014 in its new home in Piazza Roma. It tells the story of the tradition that made the town a centre of straw-hat production, a craft widespread in the Fermo hinterland.
The route illustrates all the stages of the production cycle, from the gathering and selection of straw to weaving, sewing, decorating and selling the hat. Antique tools and machinery are on display, from the simplest presses to more advanced ones.
Among the pieces on display are work and ceremonial hats, top hats, straw boaters, fezzes, feluca hats and pamelas, as well as the last hat worn by Federico Fellini, donated by his family. A special section titled “Marche, tanto di cappello” presents reinterpretations of the hat by craftsmen and designers from the Marche, made with glass, paper, leather, ceramic, stone, wood, metal and fabric.
