About the museum
Falerio Picenus was a Roman colony founded in the Augustan age for veterans of the battle of Actium, along a branch of the Via Salaria linking Ascoli Piceno to Urbisaglia. The town was equipped with paved roads, a theatre, a temple, cisterns and an amphitheatre. In late antiquity it was abandoned, and the population moved to the hill where today’s Falerone grew up; in the Piane area the Roman materials were later reused in houses.
Interest in the site arose in 1595 with the discovery of a bronze tablet bearing a rescript of the emperor Domitian. Excavations followed in the 18th and 19th centuries, especially at the theatre, and research in the 20th century; since 2021 a project by the Comune, the Soprintendenza and the University of Bologna has led to new surveys and excavations.
The archaeological park was established in 1994 and is spread through the village of Piane di Falerone, not enclosed within a single fenced area. It includes the theatre, probably of the Augustan age and among the best preserved in the Marche, which still hosts performances; the partly preserved amphitheatre; the large cistern known as the Bagni della Regina; and the medieval church of San Paolino, about 2 km from Falerone. Panels and 3D reconstructions support the visit.
