About the museum
Fumone Castle stands on a hill of about 800 metres, overlooking the Sacco valley and the ancient via Latina. It was papal property and the main castellany of the Church in Lower Lazio from 962 to 1500. In 1295 Pope Celestine V was imprisoned here, and he died in the castle on 19 May 1296.
In 1588 Pope Sixtus V sold the fortress to the Roman Longhi family, descendants of Cardinal Guglielmo Longhi, who had been created cardinal by Celestine V and were devoted to the Celestinian cult. The Longhi de Paolis marquises turned the castle into a Celestinian sanctuary and country residence; it still belongs to the family today. The complex comprises a medieval keep with a Renaissance palace built against it, a church dedicated to San Pietro Celestino V, built after Pope Paul VI's visit in 1966, and monumental hanging gardens, restored in 2024.
The guided tour, lasting about 40 minutes, includes the Celestinian sanctuary with the small prison, the noble floor with the Sala degli Antenati, the Sala degli Imperatori Romani, the Sala degli Stemmi and the Archivio, the hanging gardens and the wall walkways.
