About the museum
The Casa Museo Tommaso Gismondi occupies the Palazzo dei Canonici, at the highest point of Anagni, next to the ancient cathedral. Here the sculptor Tommaso Gismondi set up his studio in the 1970s. The space has remained open to visitors and is described by the municipality as a museum, workshop and studio all in one, because the works were created in these very rooms.
Gismondi, a native of the Ciociaria, worked for about seventy years on sacred and secular themes, with particular attention to motherhood and family. He collaborated with the Vatican during the pontificates of Paul VI and John Paul II, creating among other things the portals of the Biblioteca and of the Archivio Segreto Vaticano and the Vatican coins of Paul VI. His oil paintings include a cycle on bullfighting inspired by the years he spent in Argentina. His daughter Donatella, his only pupil, continued the work until 2016.
The collections include sculptures of various kinds, coins, medals, sketches, paintings, drawings, press cuttings and photographs. The display follows no chronological or thematic order, and many works can be viewed from all sides.
