About the museum
The visitor centre of Gran Paradiso National Park is located in the deconsecrated church of San Francesco, on the main street of Locana. Inside, an Alpine domestic setting has been carefully reconstructed, where freshly milked milk was turned into butter and cheese.
In the main hall, an animated little theatre tells the hard life of the chimney sweeps, one of the itinerant trades that the valley’s men, and often its children, practised in the cities in winter; a documentary and an interactive sound installation on the subject are also presented. In the adjoining room, a scale model describes the system of dams and the hydroelectric power station of the Piantonetto valley, one of the new trades of the Orco Valley.
