About the museum

The museum “S’omo ’e sa majarza”, Sardinian for “the house of the witch”, is devoted to witchcraft, the devil and the fantastical beings of Sardinian folklore. It occupies a restored building in the centre of Bidonì, in the Barigadu area, formerly used as the town hall.

The route traces the theme from the ancient Roman gods of death to the Inquisition and the “Malleus Maleficarum”, the 1486 treatise that guided interrogations for witchcraft. On display are woodcuts of witches and devils from the 14th to the 16th century, amulets and good-luck charms against the evil eye, remedies and formulas against illnesses and curses, the figure of “Sa Filonzana”, the woman in black with a spindle symbolising the thread of life, and the cart of the dead (“su carru de sos mortos”).

A reconstruction evokes the cave of Julia Carta, the 16th-century Sardinian witch from Siligo, who was imprisoned from 1596 to 1606 and tortured in the Inquisition prisons of Sassari.
