About the museum
The Museo del Fossile del Monte Baldo was founded in 1977, when Osvaldo Giovanazzi (1912–1999), an enthusiast from Brentonico, donated his private collection to the community. The original core has since been expanded and today comprises over 1,200 fossils collected in the northern areas of Monte Baldo.
The museum is housed in Palazzo Eccheli-Baisi, in the centre of Brentonico. The route runs through six rooms with about forty display cases devoted exclusively to finds from the Baldo range: ammonites, corals, nummulites, sea urchins, crabs and shark teeth. One room traces how fossils have been interpreted over time, from myth to scientific knowledge, while thirteen panels describe the geological events of the area over the last 230 million years.
The museum offers guided tours and themed routes and is part of the offer of the Parco Naturale Monte Baldo, which also includes viewpoints in the surrounding woods.
