About the museum
The Museo del Pianoforte Antico in Ala is a private collection founded in 1996 by the pianist Temenuschka Vesselinova. It is housed on the ground floor of the Palazzo de’ Pizzini, a baroque complex of three buildings constructed between the late 17th and the late 18th century, in the historic centre of the Trentino town known for its musical tradition and for velvet.
The collection comprises some forty keyboard instruments by European makers, including table pianos, travelling pianos, upright, grand and giraffe pianos, as well as a spinet, a pipe organ and other mechanical instruments. The instruments are restored and tuned so that they can be played, allowing visitors to hear music with the sounds of the era of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin and Liszt.
The route traces the evolution of the piano from its origins to the late 19th century. The founder leads guided visits and gives concerts on the period instruments inside the palace.
