About the museum

The Museo del Libro – Casa della Cultura is housed in Palazzo Caputi, built in 1592 at the wish of Domenico Caputi. The façade is divided into three orders of smooth rustication, and a large arched portal supports the balcony of the second order. The atrium with loggia houses the entrance to the family’s former chapel, a Roman funerary inscription and a vault decorated with gilded stucco in the rococo taste. In 1792 a second palace of the same family was joined to the building.

The Comune di Ruvo di Puglia purchased the palace in several instalments between 1985 and 1995 and began its regeneration in 2011. Since April 2016 the palace has housed the museum, which occupies fifteen rooms; those on the first floor have ceilings frescoed in the 19th century. The Biblioteca comunale “Pasquale Testini” (municipal library) is also housed in the same building.

The heritage comprises about 20,000 volumes. The Fondo antico (antique collection) numbers about 500 volumes printed between 1520 and 1830, on philosophy, literature, theology and the history of Ruvo. The Fondo Bratta, donated in 2017, brings together more than a thousand books on history and art history. Multimedia displays allow visitors to browse e-books.
