About the museum
The museum originated from a private collection begun by the brothers Giovanni (1767–1844) and Giulio Jatta (1775–1836), with the aim of preventing finds from the Ruvo area from leaving the territory. The works were kept in the family palazzo, built in the mid-19th century, and the catalogue of the collection was written by Giovanni Jatta junior (1832–1895) and published in Naples in 1869.
The Italian State acquired the collection by purchase deeds of 19 December 1990 and 10 April 1991. The museum occupies the ground floor of Palazzo Jatta and keeps its 19th-century display: the vases are not arranged by chronology but according to a criterion of beauty, in four rooms culminating in the Krater of Talos.
The first room houses geometric pottery of the Peucetian period (7th–6th centuries BC); the second about 700 red-figure vases, including a large mask krater of the 4th century BC attributed to the Painter of Baltimore; the third over 400 pieces and the marble bust of Giovanni Jatta junior; the fourth the most valuable finds, including the Talos vase and the marble bust of Giovanni Jatta senior. The collection comprises over 2,000 objects, almost all found in the Ruvo area.
