About the museum
The Museo del Marmo di Botticino opened on 22 December 1996 thanks to the strong commitment of the municipality of Botticino, with the aim of preserving the memory of the quarrying activity that characterises the area. Until 2010 it was run by volunteers of the group “La Pietra”; after a pause it reopened in December 2011 and has since worked with the Ecomuseo del Botticino.
The route runs through Villa Labus, Lascito Balduzzi, starting from the perspective garden with the marble portal at the entrance, and continues through the rooms of the villa and a small inner garden. Its themes range from geology and quarrying to the sledging (lizzatura) and transport of blocks, through to artistic craftsmanship and the community’s historical memory.
In 2019 the museum was renewed with the display “Dalla cavazione all’opera. Duemila anni di storia” (From Quarrying to Masterpiece: Two Thousand Years of History). In 2020 the Botticino Visitor Center was added, a multimedia space devoted to local excellences (marble, wine and socks); in 2023 a room dedicated to Botticino’s excellences and the PReDA documentation and research centre on local culture were opened.
