About the museum
The Pasubio ossuary stands on Colle Bellavista, in the municipality of Valli del Pasubio, just above the Pian delle Fugazze pass. Work began in 1920 on the initiative of a committee from Vicenza that wanted to keep the fallen Alpini of the Pasubio in the mountains. Construction then continued thanks to the Fondazione “3 novembre 1918”, led by General Guglielmo Pecori Giraldi, commander of the 1st Army. The monument was inaugurated on 29 August 1926 and is considered the first ossuary built after the Great War.
The design is by the architect Ferruccio Chemello: a pyramidal tower 35 metres high, built of mountain stone, with a lantern at the top. The base houses the ossuary, with a central crypt and two concentric galleries, while the sacellum (chapel) at the top is decorated with frescoes and stained glass by Tito Chini, with the collaboration of Umberto Bellotto. The complex holds the remains of 5,146 Italian soldiers and 40 Austro-Hungarian soldiers who fell on the Pasubio, and General Pecori Giraldi also rests in the crypt.
Near the sacellum is the museum of the 1st Army, renovated in its rooms and displays. The route includes an introductory gallery on the Pasubio front, the Sala degli Eroi (Hall of Heroes) devoted to minor figures of the war, the Sala dell'Armamento (Armaments Hall) with life-size settings, and a trench and a command hut that visitors can walk through. The multimedia room features a model of the massif linked to an interactive screen with 30 sites, historical profiles and period footage.
