About the museum
The museum originated in 1930, when Zuarina Tanara, daughter of Faustino Tanara, donated her father’s objects and documents to the municipality of Langhirano so that they would remain available to the public and, above all, to the people of Langhirano. Later donations from local families expanded the collection.
The collections were presented to the public with an exhibition in 1982 and then arranged in a permanent display in the rooms of the Centro Culturale, then on the upper floor of the Palazzo Municipale. In 1998 the cultural services moved to the former historic slaughterhouse and the museum was dismantled. It reopened on 10 January 2009 in the gallery of the Centro Culturale, with a new display.
The route, in two sections along the gallery, is spread over fifteen panels. The first concerns the life of Faustino Tanara, a Garibaldian colonel from Langhirano who fought in the wars of independence and was active in the mutual aid society “Fratellanza artigiana”; the second concerns the mutual aid societies of Langhirano. Letters from the Tanara archive accompany excerpts from the biography “Faustino Tanara dei mille” (1926) by Luciano Barbieri, as well as 19th-century documents and photographs.
