About the museum
The Museo del Tartufo di Fragno is the most recent member of the Musei del Cibo network of the Province of Parma and is located in Calestano, in the Apennines, where the Fragno truffle is gathered. The entrance is in the Palazzo Comunale.
The exhibition route is divided into six stages, each with its own theme: “Arrivo” (Arrival) introduces the territory; “Cerco” (I Search) covers truffle hunting; “Conosco” (I Know) covers botany; “Vivo” (I Live) explores the woodland; “Gusto” (I Taste) looks at truffles at the table; and “Capisco” (I Understand) covers history, traditions and curiosities. Visitors discover the natural habitat of the truffle, its links with folklore, such as the Roman belief that it arose from lightning or its supposed aphrodisiac properties, the truffle hunters with their small digging tools, the truffle dog, its use in cooking and its preservation.
The spaces are deliberately small and irregular, with natural materials such as stone, wood and iron and soft lighting, to preserve a sense of mystery.
