About the museum
The Museo Papirologico of the University of Salento was set up within a project coordinated by the universities of Lecce and Catania, funded by the European Community, and opened on 22 June 2007. Since 2009 it has been part of the university’s Sistema Museale di Ateneo, together with six other university museums. In 2024 it was named after Mario Capasso, the papyrologist who launched the university’s tradition of papyrological studies.
The museum is on the ground floor of the Palazzo Palladiano, in the Studium 2000 university complex. Its spaces include a vestibule, an exhibition room, a teaching room, a library, a laboratory for restoration, photography and papyrus reading, and an archaeological room.
The collection, catalogued under the code PUL (Papyri Universitatis Lupiensis), comprises over 400 papyri from Egypt. Greek and demotic texts predominate, but there are also hieroglyphic, hieratic and Coptic papyri, most of them acquired from 1992 onwards. The museum is linked to the Centro di Studi Papirologici and to the excavation project at Soknopaiou Nesos in the Fayum.
