About the museum
The collection was started in 1946 by master upholsterer Vittorio Zironi. After some twenty years of research, it was first shown to the public in Palazzo Salina Brazzetti in via Barberia, opened in 1966. Since 1990 the museum has been housed in the neoclassical Villa Spada, in via di Casaglia. The collection is now owned by the City of Bologna and managed by the Musei Civici d’Arte Antica.
The collections include Italian and French fabrics from the 16th to the 19th century, lace, embroidery, sacred vestments, costumes, banners, passementerie, looms and upholstery tools. The oldest core consists of fragments of Coptic textiles. The tools include a large 18th-century Lombard loom, converted to the Jacquard system in 1801, and a rare ribbon loom from 1370.
The museum also has a specialised library with a study centre, an archive and a restoration workshop. It holds the banners of the old Bolognese guilds and the historical archive of Aemilia Ars.
