About the museum
The museum was created in 1928 and is housed in rooms adjoining the cloister attached to the church of San Giuseppe Sposo, in Via Bellinzona. Its original nucleus was gathered by the founder, Father Leonardo Montalti of Mercato Saraceno.
It holds about one hundred paintings and various sacred furnishings from churches and convents of Emilia and Romagna. Among the artists are Pietro Lianori, Marco Zoppo, Innocenzo da Imola, Prospero Fontana, Calvaert, Cesi, Passerotti, Franceschini, Crespi and Gandolfi; among the sculptors Zaccaria Zacchi, Mazza, Piò and Rossetti, to which are added terracotta nativity scenes and reliquaries.
The convent dates back to the 13th century (1254) and took the title of San Giuseppe in 1566, when the Servants of Mary (Servi di Maria) took possession of it. According to Wikipedia, in November 2023 the museum was being rearranged.
