About the museum
The museum, opened in 2001, is housed in the former church of Sant’Agostino in Panicale, a building of 14th-century origin. It displays tulle embroideries made in the first half of the 20th century, from private collections and from the churches of the town.
Anita Belleschi Grifoni turned the local tradition of tulle embroidery into a commercial product through her school and the brand “Ars Panicalensis”. Among her clients were the House of Savoy and the Torlonia princes. The school also aimed to give women economic independence, and after it closed, many embroiderers continued to pass on the technique.
