About the museum
The gallery is housed on the noble floor of Palazzo Zucchetti, the seat of Panicale’s town hall, in the Council Chamber and the Giunta Chamber. It holds 31 canvases that Francesco Mariottini, professor of civil and canon law born in Perugia in 1733 and died in Panicale in 1803, rector of the University of Perugia from 1776, commissioned between 1765 and 1780 to decorate the family palace.
They are mainly celebratory portraits of men of arms, jurists, men of letters and churchmen born in Panicale or connected with the town, among them the condottiero Boldrino, the painter Masolino and various members of the Saccalossi family. The paintings are the work of at least six artists; the most remarkable piece is a canvas with 48 medallions showing the busts of Panicale’s illustrious men, each identified by a cartouche.
About a century later, after Italian unification, the mayor Pindaro Mancini persuaded the heirs to donate the canvases to furnish the town hall, where the collection has been displayed since 1870.
