About the museum
The museum is set up inside the church of San Giuseppe in Paciano, also known as Santa Maria della Concezione or the “chiesa dentro” (inner church), whose spaces have been restored and given a new use. Immediately after the entrance, in the chapel of the Concezione, is the banner of the Madonna delle Grazie, made around 1470 by the workshop of Benedetto Bonfigli. Along the nave, where votive frescoes of the 15th century came to light in 2000 (two of them bear the dates 1444 and 1449), wooden statues from the 17th to the 18th century are displayed.
In the presbytery, with the choir loft and the two neoclassical columns, church furnishings from the 16th to the 18th century are on show: crosses, monstrances, chalices – one of them dated 1591 –, pyxes, reliquaries, tabernacles and candlesticks. In its original position is the canvas by Francesco Appiani (1704–1792) depicting the Marriage of the Virgin.
On the mezzanine floor are a small room with archaeological finds recovered after the Second World War at the Fonteboccio archaeological site, and a room with some of the oldest and most significant sacred vestments in the area. A small opening allows visitors to enter the old bell tower and the choir loft, where an organ by Adamo Rossi from 1795 is preserved.
