About the museum
The MUVIT – Museo del Vino was conceived and created by Giorgio and Maria Grazia Lungarotti and opened to the public in 1974. It is located in Torgiano, in the agricultural wing of the Palazzo Graziani-Baglioni, a 17th-century noble summer residence, and is run by the Fondazione Lungarotti, established in 1987.
The museum is interdisciplinary: it follows the relationship between vine, wine and the decorative arts over millennia, in the Mediterranean and in continental Europe. The route unfolds across some twenty rooms with more than 3,000 artefacts: archaeological finds (Cycladic jugs, Hittite vases, Greek, Etruscan and Roman ceramics, glass and bronzes), tools for viticulture and winemaking, ceramic wine vessels from the Middle Ages to the present day, goldsmiths’ objects and textiles.
One section is devoted to prints and drawings from the 15th to the 20th century, with over 600 sheets opening with Andrea Mantegna’s Bacchanal with a Vat, and one room gathers treatises and literary works on wine. The rooms also illustrate Umbrian viticulture, the sacred and profane symbolism of the vine and the craftsmanship linked to wine.
