About the museum
The museum is housed in Palazzo Malizia, on the main square of Torgiano, and brings together two collections devoted to contemporary art ceramics. It arose from the idea of linking art to the territory and to wine: in 1996, on the occasion of the vino novello (young wine) festival, the ceramicist Nino Caruso, together with the municipal administration, launched the Vaselle d’autore project.
Each year Italian and foreign artists are invited to reinterpret the vasella, the traditional Umbrian wine jug, and the works are presented in November on the occasion of the new wine. Over time the collection has grown to include about 150 pieces by dozens of artists, among them Betty Woodman, Piero Dorazio, Carla Accardi, Achille Perilli, Joe Tilson and Bruno Ceccobelli; the project, coordinated by Caruso, continued until 2017.
The second collection is the Nino Caruso collection, donated to the Comune di Torgiano: about sixty ceramic sculptures made from the 1950s onwards, grouped in series such as the Opere arcaiche, the stele, the columns and portals, Africa Africa and the Mitovasi, with references to Etruscan, Greek and African art.
