About the museum

The MOO Museo dell’Olivo e dell’Olio was created by Maria Grazia Marchetti Lungarotti at the wish of her husband Giorgio, as a continuation of the Museo del Vino. Opened in 2000, it is the second museum hub of the Fondazione Lungarotti, which runs it. It is located in a small group of medieval houses within the walls of the castle of Torgiano.

The route unfolds over eleven rooms. The first offer information prepared by the CNR on the botanical characteristics of the olive tree, the varieties most common in Umbria, and traditional and modern techniques of cultivation and oil extraction. The following rooms, set in the premises of an oil mill that was active until a few decades ago, document the evolution of oil-making machinery, from the first stone mortars of the 5th millennium BC to the trapetum and up to continuous-cycle systems.

On the two upper floors the uses of oil and the olive tree in daily life, myth, religion, cosmetics, literature and folk traditions are illustrated.
