About the museum
The museum is located on the main street at the foot of the town of Deruta, where workshops producing artistic ceramics have always been concentrated. It is the final stop of a visit that begins at the factory, where the entire production cycle, from clay processing to firing, still takes place, in spaces that incorporate the remains of the first kiln, dating from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Opened in 2002, the museum occupies the top floor of the factory and displays over 500 pieces that marked its production, from 19th-century examples to shapes from the 1960s. The large family collection was reassembled by the current owner after it had been dispersed through the antiques market and various European museums; it includes originals and replicas made by the artists who worked at the factory.
The route opens with fragments of medieval painted pottery found at the factory. One section commemorates Alpinolo Magnini and Ubaldo Grazia, master craftsmen who in the 1920s reproduced the lustred display plates (piatti da pompa), a technique widespread among the Deruta majolica makers of the 16th century that gives the glaze golden reflections.
