About the museum

The Museo della città di Bettona brings together the civic picture gallery and the archaeological section in Piazza Cavour. The rooms are in two adjoining buildings: the Palazzo del Podestà, built in 1367 during the rebuilding of the village promoted by Cardinal Albornoz after its destruction by the Perugians, and the neoclassical Palazzo Biancalana. In the Palazzo del Podestà the fresco of the Maestà with saints of 1380 is still preserved.

The picture gallery was founded in 1904 and holds around sixty works from the 13th to the 19th century, mostly paintings of the Umbrian school of the 15th and 16th centuries. Artists represented include Perugino, Tiberio d'Assisi, Fiorenzo di Lorenzo and Dono Doni, whose Adoration of the Shepherds of 1543 is on display; there are also a 15th-century polychrome wooden Crucifixion and 17th-century paintings. In 1987 twenty-eight works were stolen to order and recovered only in 1990.

The archaeological section, on the ground floor of Palazzo Biancalana, presents Etruscan and Roman finds from the area, including cippi (boundary stones), ceramics and a marble head of Aphrodite from the mid-Imperial period. From the lower floor one can access a medieval well discovered under Piazza Cavour.
