About the museum
The Benedictine Abbey of the Santissima Trinità, known as the Badia di Cava, was founded in 1011 by Saint Alferio and for centuries was a religious and cultural centre that attracted leading artists. The museum occupies the rooms of the Palatium, the 13th-century guesthouse of the monastery.
The first room houses Roman sarcophagi, amphorae and fragments of medieval sculpture. In the 13th-century room are displayed Sienese paintings from the 14th and 15th centuries, a Madonna and Child in polychrome wood and 16th-century panels; in a renovated room are canvases from the 17th and 18th centuries.
The display cases contain objects in metal, porcelain, ivory and ceramic, including a Byzantine-style ivory casket from the 12th century and 18th-century Abruzzese plates. The collection is completed by Neapolitan majolica, liturgical vestments, a 14th-century nautical chart and choir books.
