About the museum

The museum opened in 2009 in the historic centre of Salerno, near the cathedral, replacing the former Museo Didattico, after the complete restoration of the building and the reorganisation of the displays. The venue is the former church of San Gregorio, built around the year 1000 in the Lombard period.

The route is delivered through films and three-dimensional reproductions with professional actors, who explain the techniques and knowledge of the Scuola Medica Salernitana, especially between the 10th and 13th centuries. Illuminated panels show reproductions of medieval illuminated manuscripts on medical subjects.

The best-known section is devoted to the “Regimen Sanitatis Salernitanum”; a glass floor reveals the building's original structure, original and reconstructed surgical instruments are on display, and some panels commemorate Trotula de Ruggiero, considered the first woman doctor in history. Since 2012 reception and activities have been entrusted to the Galahad cooperative, and since 2014 the museum has been overseen by the Ministero della Cultura.
