About the museum
The museum is housed in the abbey of San Colombano in Bobbio, in the rooms that once held the famous scriptorium and the prestigious library of the monastery. It collects finds from excavations in the surrounding area and in the crypt of the basilica of San Colombano, as well as objects from Bobbio Cathedral.
The current display dates from 1997 and follows a historical order in six sections: from Roman finds, such as tombs, amphorae and the altar of Diana, it moves on to the early Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Among the most precious pieces are a 3rd–4th-century ivory casket with Orpheus and animals, of Syro-Palestinian workmanship, and a large alabaster hydria of the same period.
The largest part is the lapidarium, with capitals, small columns and parapet slabs from the 9th-century basilica and Lombard and Carolingian stones, including the tombstone of Cumiano, a gift from King Liutprand to the abbot of Bobbio. Pilgrims’ devotional objects are also on display, such as eulogiae and Palestinian ampullae, reliquaries and liturgical furnishings, and a picture gallery that holds the polyptych by Bernardino Luini of 1522.
