About the museum

The Museo diocesano di Bobbio was founded in 2014, a thousand years after the diocese was established with the installation of its first bishop, Pietroaldo. It is located on the first floor of the Bishop's Palace (Palazzo vescovile), which overlooks Piazza Duomo. The building was erected at the end of the 11th century together with the cathedral, rebuilt in the 15th century after a fire, and remodelled in Baroque forms between the 17th and 18th centuries. In the 19th century the bishop's chapel and new rooms were added above the south aisle of the cathedral.

The route runs through ten rooms. The entrance hall tells the story of the diocese with maps and documents and holds the vestments of the last bishop, Monsignor Pietro Zuccarino (1953–1973). The hall of bishops is decorated with a large fresco by Francesco Porro from the early decades of the 18th century, with portraits of all the bishops of Bobbio. Another room houses the Treasury of the Cathedral, with wooden carvings, goldsmiths' work and vestments from the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.

The collection comprises about 150 works from the territory of the diocese, from the Gothic pastoral staff of Bishop Mondani of 1479 to contemporary chalices, missals, antiphonaries and paintings by artists such as Francesco Bassano, Agostino Santagostino, Giovanni Andrea De Ferrari and Daniele Crespi.
