About the museum
The museum is located in Val Castoriana, near Preci, and occupies several rooms of the Sant’Eutizio abbey complex. The abbey was founded, according to tradition, by San Spes in 470 and is a splendid example of Romanesque architecture. The rooms, perhaps part of the original core, came to light during restoration work after the 1997 earthquake.
Four rooms on the first floor illustrate the history of the abbey and its links with the valley communities: the treasury, with reliquaries, liturgical furnishings, silverware, embroidery and a wooden statue of Sant’Eutizio attributed to Nicola da Siena; the figure of Abbot Giacomo Crescenzi, who commissioned the works by Caravaggio for the Contarelli Chapel in San Luigi dei Francesi; the surgical school of Preci, which originated right at the abbey; and a reconstructed pharmacy with an alchemical laboratory. The collections also include textiles, worked leather, wooden sculptures and prehistoric and Roman finds.
