About the museum
The museum is housed in the monastery of San Nilo in Grottaferrata, a Greek-rite abbey founded at the beginning of the 11th century, and gathers material accumulated over time by the Basilian monks.
The archaeological section includes marble, sarcophagi and portraits, among them those of Alexander the Great and Constantine, and a series of inscriptions, mostly funerary. The best-known work is a Greek funerary stele of the Classical age showing a young man seated and reading.
The historical-artistic collection holds frescoes from the medieval church, Islamic and Sicilian ceramics and a precious 14th-century omophorion. A reconstruction is also planned of the Ipogeo delle Ghirlande, an imperial-age tomb discovered in 2000 near the catacombs, with the sarcophagi of Aebutia Quarta and Tito Carvilinus Gemellus.
